    Throughout the world, on average two tsunamis occur each year that inflict damage near the source. Approximately every 15 years, a destructive, ocean-wide tsunami occurs. NOAA has primary responsibility for providing tsunami warnings to the nation, and a leadership role in tsunami observations and research.
