An Award-Winning Year for NOAA CSC Publications

This has been an award-winning year for publications produced by staff members of the NOAA Coastal Services Center (CSC). So far in 2008, two of the Center’s newsletters and a national trade journal have received ten state, national, and international awards.

The winning publications are:

• Coastal Connections, a bimonthly newsletter focusing on tools, information resources, and methodologies of interest to the nation's coastal resource managers.
• Fellow News, a quarterly newsletter providing information about Coastal Management Fellows and the fellowship program.
• Coastal Services, a bimonthly trade journal for the nation’s coastal resource managers.

“Each of our publications is strongly customer-focused,” says Donna McCaskill, NOAA CSC’s communications manager. “What these awards reinforce is that we also hit the mark as far as professionalism and quality.”

CSC publications have also received awards from the South Carolina chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, the National Association of Government Communicators, the 14th Annual Communicator Awards International Print Competition, and the Carolina Chapter and the International Technical Publications Competition of the Society for Technical Communication.

In addition to general awards for excellence, the publications’ writing, copy editing, and graphics also received special recognition.

The international recognition included an award of distinction for Coastal Services in the 14th Annual Communicator Awards International Print Competition in the copy/writing category, and an award of excellence for Coastal Services from the Society for Technical Communication’s International Technical Publications Competition in the magazines category.

“We know this is a special year,” remarks McCaskill. “We feel this says as much about our customers and partners and their excellent on-the-ground work. Our publications would not have shown so well without having such good source material as their basis.”
