Chief Boatswain Gregory Walker, who serves on the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster, led the redecking project of the ship, saving $80,000. This massive project, which includes the stripping and repainting of all exterior decks of the research vessel, will cost $30,000 in paint, equipment rental, and overtime, instead of the $110,000 which had been originally quoted. Greg managed the project effectively, and has also been able to manage his deck department as the ship continues its typical winter in-port projects. The opportunity for additional overtime earned during the winter has also contributed greatly to the
ship’s morale and retention.

Team Member of the Month
February, 2008

Krissy Rusello is the technical lead for the Athos Oil Spill Natural Resource Damage Assessment, which occurred in March 2004. Krissy was responsible for completing a draft Damage Assessment and Restoration Plan which documents a complex assessment and restoration selection process, designed to compensate the public
for injuries. Krissy successfully led a multi-round negotiation process among staff from NOAA, six other trustee agencies, and the National Pollution Fund Center. Krissy also achieved an exceptional level of public awareness for this project. She developed attractive, detailed outreach/press materials which led to several news articles and an interview on National Public Radio, and is co-producing a short video
with the NOS Ocean Media Center to document one of the urban restoration projects.
